about the artistPhotography is my passion. Although I trained in art and design, as a photographer I am almost entirely self-taught; I came to photography by chance. When I trained in stage design for theatre, I enjoyed making scale models of my designs, and I took photographs of these under various lights, carefully manipulated in a studio. These "staged photographs" took on a life of their own, and gave me a new direction: making imaginative models to photograph. All my life I have collected natural objects: shells, leaves, feathers, stones, seed pods…whatever interests my eye. What I have learned from my staged photographs I apply to these natural forms: with the right light and the right viewpoint, ordinary things become unfamiliar, mysterious and strange. |
